    Allergies, Nutrition & Ingredients

  • What are allergens?
  • An allergen is any normally harmless substance that causes an immediate allergic reaction in a susceptible person. Click on the link below to know more about food allergens.

    https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/food-nutrition/food-safety/food-allergies-intolerances/food-allergies.html

  • What allergens does Peace by Chocolate process/store in the manufacturing facility?
  • Current allergens present at our factory are as follows.

Milk, Soy, Peanuts, Cashews, Hazelnuts, Pistachios, Almonds, Wheat (Gluten), Barley (Gluten).

We also have Coconut in our facility, which is NOT a priority allergen in Canada as per Health Canada but is considered an allergen in the USA.

    • Why is there a “May Contain” statement at the end of the ingredients list on Peace by Chocolate Products?

The allergen statement "May Contain" visible on the ingredient labels of our prepackaged food items, is a precautionary and voluntary measure from a regulatory standpoint. We opt to incorporate the "may contain" statement to inform customers about the potential for cross-contamination in our facility, despite our diligent efforts to minimize such risks.

  • Does Peace by Chocolate’s dark chocolate have MILK as an ingredient?

  • This is a tough question to answer. The answer is NO in general terms but YES regarding food safety. NO, we do not purposefully add MILK in our Dark Chocolates, unless the dark chocolate has any cream fillings (e.g.: Our Dark chocolate with strawberry cream). Our regular Dark chocolates (e.g.: Dark chocolate with Almonds and Sea salt, Nova Scotia bars, Newfoundland bars) have NO milk added to their recipe.

  • If so, why do your dark chocolate labels declare MILK as an Ingredient at the end of the ingredients list?

  • As technology and science advance, so does our understanding of allergens. Recently our suppliers have changed their labeling and as per our communication with them, there is always an unavoidable risk of cross-contamination of traces of milk ingredients because of using a common production line for making both Milk chocolate and dark chocolate internally and externally.

  • Why do some of your labels of the same product say Milk as an ingredient and some not?

  • The transition from old to new labels in the marketplace may be a gradual process. Consequently, consumers should remain vigilant as our products labeled or described as "dark chocolate" inherently include traces of milk, as detailed earlier. In simpler terms, in the case of our solid dark chocolate, the statement "may contain milk ingredients" should be construed as confirming the presence of such ingredients.

  • Is Peace by Chocolate Facility Food Safety certified?
  • We have invested a lot of resources in developing HACCP-based food safety plans to maintain our food safety commitment. Our facility is Federally registered under the “Safe Food for the Canadians Act”, FDA, and audited by a third-party organization, SQF certified.

    • What is SQF?

SQF is a food safety standard recognized by GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative). GFSI has approved SQF as one of the benchmarked schemes that meet their stringent requirements for food safety management systems.

  • What does SQF recognition mean?

  • This recognition means that companies implementing SQF can demonstrate compliance with GFSI's global standards, enhancing their credibility and market access. The SQF (Safe Quality Food) Institute is a division of FMI—The Food Industry Association, established to administer the SQF Program, a leading global food safety and quality certification and management system.

  • Are Peace by Chocolate products HALAL and KOSHER certified?

  • We are NOT currently HALAL and/or KOSHER certified, but our products are HALAL and KOSHER suitable, which means they are suitable with individuals who follow the requirements of HALAL and KOSHER. We are working our way to get these official certifications soon and we will make an announcement!

  • Why does my chocolate have white, greyish marks and/or streaks on it? Has it gone bad?
  • NO, not exactly. It is called chocolate blooming, a natural phenomenon. Despite its unappealing look and altered texture, chocolate experiencing "bloom" is typically safe for consumption.

  • What is chocolate blooming? Why does this happen?
  • Chocolate bloom refers to a white or grayish layer, characterized by blotches or streaks, that can develop on the surface of the chocolate. Two distinct types of chocolate bloom exist: Fat Bloom and Sugar Bloom. Click on the link below to know more about chocolate blooming.
